Even though the present ran for several years, it was definitely one of the most underrated cartoons of the era. Unlinke most toons during that era, it actually had continuity with a ample yarn. The anecdote begins with the unpleasant wizard Wrathamon (while conquering villages for his master Sett) placing a spell on Conan’s parents & grandfather. The spell turned them to “living stone.” As such Conan, with the back of modern allies embarks upon a quest to undo the spell and establish the world from Sett.

The following paragraph is in my other reviews, but I fill it bears repeating. This six Disk DVD Dwelling is wonderful. The Describe and Sound quality are so very suitable that you feel as though you are watching it in a theater. The closed captioning and Audio advance in other languages besides English. It’s quandary packed with all sorts of extra bonus specials. The Luminous creator, Joss Whedon and other staff members are at their very best, impartial as they were with their work on Buffy (which is also a must have) . I not only highly recommend this Season disk region, but the other four seasons as well. Quite a bit of quality work went into the making of all five seasons. They are a valuable seize for any Angel fan! It’s completely impossible to be anything but extremely delighted with this remove as well as the rest of the series. The writing, acting, directing, etc… are fabulous per usual. This is without expect once again feature film quality. The fact that all but the first season is filmed in Letter Box gives it that theater feel. In addition, the closed-captioning is less likely to interfere with the represent.

David Boreanaz (Angel) and Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia) are shiny in their performances together as well as the definite sexual tension between them. They play it to the hilt. I personally would have liked to recognize them come by together, but Joss Whedon as always had other ideas. Yet, another character was added at the waste of season two, Amy Acker (Fred) . She was rescued by the crew from Pylea, Lorne’s home demon dimension. She joins Angel investigations, starting out a microscopic bit on the crazy side. She grows into a pivotal member of the group. Amy Acker is quite a versatile actor. I must give extra credit to the incomparable Julie Benz (Darla, Vampire Extraordinaire) . She was introduced at the ruin of Season One, brought serve by Wolfram and Hart as Human. She does an exceptional job in playing the wickedly pissed off pregnant vampire and then redeeming herself in Episode 9 “Lullaby”, by taking her beget life so that her son may live. I’m aware that quite a few fans didn’t like her until Lullaby, but I always belief she was astounding and was very sorry to spy her go as a on and off regular. However, not to wretchedness fans she will reappear now and again. As in many cases in the Joss Whedon universe the humdrum extinguish up working again and sometimes more. I not only highly recommend this Season disk station, but the other four seasons as well. Any factual Angel fan must complete their place with this one. It’s a keeper folks. Assume this before it gets sold out and you miss your chance to continue your collection. ORDER IMMEDIATELY AND DON’T FORGET TO Recall SEASONS ONE, TWO, FOUR AND FIVE WHILE YOUR AT IT.

Warning: Lots of spoilers.

Season Three of Angel remains, in many ways, my well-liked of the show’s accelerate. The shows are persistently well-behaved, but if I had to assign my finger on a specific reason I like it so distinguished, it is that the cast meshes together perfectly. By the demolish of the season, there would be major–at the time seemingly impossible to mend–rifts between some of the members of Angel Investigations, but the core group was the best to date. Angel, restored to the group as their spiritual if not technical leader, has recovered his sense of purpose. Cordy (whose presence is missed mightily in the Fifth Season–I hope she and Joss Whedon patch up their differences and work her help into the demonstrate where she belongs–Note: their differences, apart from the official rhetoric, apparently revolving around her leaving the indicate for a few episodes arrive the demolish of this season, and her delayed announcement of her real-life pregnancy in Season Four, causing significantly rewriting–my gut feeling is that she will be succor after a period of “punishment”) has completely celebrated her role as the contact to the Powers That Be, and both works hard at becoming a more primary member of the team and manages to work a compromise to deal with the astonishing physical toll the visions are taking on her (by becoming section demon–a colossal step that one could hardly imagine the Cordelia of the first three years of Buffy making) . Wesley and Gunn are both taken by the original resident of Hotel Angel, Winifred aka Fred, the scientifically gleaming but psychologically traumatized young woman they had rescued from Pylea. And finally, Lorne, formerly known as The Host, moves in when his karaoke bar has to stop. It is a immense group, and the interaction between all of them is wonderful. And the romance! Well, the potential of romance. Fred is initially smitten with Angel, her rescuer. Wes and Gunn gradually plunge in like with Fred. And Cordy and Angel are both quite obviously growing closer and closer to one another.

Against this background of interpersonal relationships, Angel unexpectedly becomes a father. Darla, with whom he had had sex in Season Two in a futile attempt to lose his soul, returns to LA, in an exceedingly pregnant space, all the more worthy for the fact that vampires cannot reproduce sexually (they reproduce through that biting thing) . The result is a cute baby Angel dubs Connor, which is all well and first-rate until he is kidnapped and taken to a demon dimension, where he grows up to be an uber inflamed, bad kid zigzag solely on revenging himself on Angel, who he has been taught to abhor by the man who kidnapped him. In the entirety of Buffy/Angel, the Connor narrative line might be the least common in the history of the exhibit. Peaceful, it doesn’t support this from being a very salubrious season indeed. Unlike most years of Buffy/Angel, Season Three is carried less by the season-long chronicle arcs than by the individual episodes. There are some sizable shows, and many safe moments. The most harrowing might be the torturous decision that Wes has to acquire, and the ample payment he has to pay for attempting to obey the dictates of conscience.

One of my accepted moments in the season occurs when the writers pick in one of the colossal in-jokes in TV history. On Season Six of Buffy, Buffy is so broke that she has to engage a demeaning job slinging hamburgers and frying processed chicken product patties at a fast-food joint called Doublemeat Palace. It is probably the most biting joke at the expense of the fast-food industry in the history of TV (especially ironic given the fact that Sarah Michelle Gellar’s career began as a very runt child in a well-known series of commercials for Burger King explicitly attacking MacDonald’s) . As a result of the Doublemeat Palace episodes, MacDonald’s and other food outlets ceased advertising on Buffy. Meanwhile, on Angel, Wesley is researching a prophecy and is striving to solve the last portion of the puzzle. To do so, he needs to consult an idol in the shape of a statue, but when he goes to the coordinates, he sees not an imposing statue, but a personified plastic hamburger (assume the Hamburgler from MacDonald’s) . The image of a tedious plastic hamburger person being a noteworthy and all lustrous entity is droll enough on its have, but lustrous about the conflict with the speedy food industry on Angel’s sister demonstrate gives the scene an entire different dimension.

The exhibit ends on a spectacularly chaotic sign. Angel, unlike Buffy, has tended to destroy each year with far more loose ends. Every season ends with as many questions raised as answered. Of no season closer is this truer than this year. The final episode sees Angel and Cordy, both obviously with strong feelings for one another, agreeing to meet on the beach approach Malibu to “have a talk.” (No mention is made about that inferior minute curse afflicting Angel, which I found titillating. No curse and Angel would have been befriend with Buffy.) But Cordy is unexpectedly called upon to become a Higher Being and ends the season by ascending into the Higher Realm, and Angel is bushwhacked by Connor and, in one of the most nightmarish moments in the demonstrate, encased in a metal cage and lowered to the bottom of the Pacific. The season started off with everyone feeling sparkling salubrious about things, but ends with Cordy no longer on Earth, Angel on the bottom of the ocean, and Wesley recovering from a near-deadly distress and utterly alienated from all his friends. And all of this sets up the utterly considerable fourth season.

This brand-new 50th Anniversary edition of CAROUSEL is definitely a must for all fans of the uplifting and spirited Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. Considered by Rodgers as the personal favourite of all his works, and based on the play “Liliom” by Ferenc Molnar; the anecdote concerns innocent factory-girl Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones) and jaded carnival barker Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae) . Despite coming from the opposite sides of the track, the two descend in cherish, but their relationship is tempered by Billy’s violent outbursts and inability to bag an unbiased job. When Julie becomes pregnant, he is talked into committing a robbery, but the notion backfires when he falls on his acquire knife and dies while trying to hasten the police. Now in Heaven, Billy is given one last chance to redeem himself and to reconcile his now-teenaged daughter. Filled with haunting songs like “If I Loved You” and “You’ll Never Ride Alone”, CAROUSEL remains a very enchanting film experience.

This DVD has been available for a while in the UK and Australia, and will finally procure a US release this November. Extra features will include audio commentary from Shirley Jones and Reduce Redman; an all-new featurette “Turns on the Carousel”, vintage performances from the “General Foods” Rodgers & Hammerstein TV tribute (unique Broadway leads John Raitt and Jan Clayton performing the complete Bench Scene/”If I Loved You”) . Also included are several rare MovieTone news segments, and the deleted numbers “Blow High Blow Obscene” and “You’re a Odd One, Julie Jordan”.

In an age where a science fiction thriller can reach 3 hours, it’s though-provoking that assist in 1956 20th Century Fox decided that a movie running two and one half hours was long enough for a musical. So what did they do? Oh, unbiased merely edit out two movie sequences containing the songs “You’re a Uncommon One, Julie Jordan” and “Blow High, Blow Crude”. Hello? And how long was the classic 1939 “Gone With the Wind”? Over three hours? What a pity, because Rodgers & Hammerstein’s amazing “Carousel” (their personal accepted musical) deserved to be seen complete, no matter how long it may have been!! The deleted scenes added to the memoir and the songs were tall. Luckily the two deleted songs can be heard on the VERY COMPLETE movie CD soundtrack (stare my review of it) . Since so many DVDs these days are coming out with Director’s Chop versions of more novel movies, perhaps “Carousel” may one day be re-released in it’s aesthetic entirety, that is unless the Hollywood morons of 1956 threw away the deleted film!! For the time being, let’s be thankful for the “Carousel” of which I’m writing. Highly Recommended.

UPDATE:

On the recently reissued 2-CD station of “Carousel” is the 1934 french film “Liliom”, in which “Carousel” is based upon. While an appealing bonus feature, it’s ruined by subtitles that are flashed so speedy that they require race reading skills. At other times there are extended moments in the film where subtitles don’t even appear. A very erratic presentation, to say the least.

This is the first Sonja Henie portray released on DVD (and her only one in Technicolor) . It is not from her best period but the lovely Technicolor and her skating and dancing scenes more than beget up for it. Iris Adrian adds to the fun.

(RKO, 1945)

——————————-

This is an unusually robust, earthy film for Norwegian skating sensation Sonia Henie… Her other films tended to be heavenly goodie-two-shoesy, but this gradual WWII flick has a ravishing salty script, apparently influenced by the hard-bitten film noir genre of the time. Here, Henie is a hardworking professional figure skater who falls for a hard-drinking, roughneck hockey player whose awful temper and alcoholism gets him banned from the sport (played by Michael O’Shea) . He in turn is pursued by the trampy, sexually aggressive wife of one of his best friends, who plies him with booze and (apparently) leads him astray. The dialogue is corpulent of both implied and surprisingly speak rawness — hardly the family-friendly fare of Henie’s earlier films. All in all, aesthetic though-provoking! You might be surprised at how engrossing the situation is… the skating’s fair pretty, too! (Joe Sixpack, Slipcue film reviews)

This film is a mountainous masterpiece of filmmaking! Perfect in every sense. It is Anthony Perkin’s masterpiece as well….no other character in film history makes you cringe yet feel sorry for at the same time. It takes a special talent to do that and why he didn’t gain nominated for the Oscar considerable less earn will never be understood!! Unprejudiced as Vivien Leigh will always be Scarlett O’Hara, Judy Garland will always be Dorothy, Anthony Perkins will always be Norman Bates.

The rest of the cast is outstanding as well…notably Janet Leigh as the doomed Marion Crane. She deserved her Oscar nomination for her performance.

The DVD is loaded with a dandy of an extra “The Making of Psycho” plus additional trailers and bonus materials that invent this edition well worth owning. Even without the extras though, this film would detached be a masterpiece thanks to Hitchock, Stefano’s screenplay, and Perkins’ unparalleled acting!

Alfred Hitchcock guarded the region of PSYCHO against publicity, and in 1960 audiences came to the film without being able to anticipate the unexpected twists and turns of the site. More than forty years later, the movie’s fame is such that even those who have not seen it are often able to sketch the basic outline of the account in a few words. This demonstrates the film’s fame; what demonstrates it quality, however, is the fact that even those who know the region before seeing it are seldom disappointed.

Very loosely based on Robert Bloch’s pulp unique, which was itself very loosely based on killer Ed Gein, PSYCHO presents us with the chronicle of Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) –who, in a moment of madness, steals forty-thousand dollars. Running troubled, Marion checks into the out-of-the-way Bates Motel. And there, as the DVD production notes gracefully dwelling, she becomes the most grossly inconvenienced hotel guest in cinema history.

The gradual 1950s and early 1960s saw a deluge of indecent budget and badly made films that commanded box office business via tawdry subject matter, and according to lore director Alfred Hitchcock was racy to peek what might happen if he himself made such a film–but made it well. Working with a distinguished script and gifted cast and crew, the result was a masterpiece. Although it is often described as a awe film, PSYCHO is less terror than it is a gawk in paranoia and suspense, and certainly a lesson in the fact that one need not bother with graphic gore or spacious budgets to ticket audiences.

Much of the film’s success is in its detail. Joseph Stephano’s script is memorable for its repetition of verbal motifs and its extremely disquieting tone; Bernard Herrman’s distinguished all-strings gather builds tremendously upon it. The simple yet meticulous sets communicate building unease, and the strangely flat, semi-documentary shadowy and white cinematography has a voyeuristic edge that is extremely disturbing.

There are elements that can be justly criticized–moments at which the script sounds a fake heed or characterizations seem a bit artificial–but these miniature points move against the overall power of Hitchcock’s vision, a vision that here makes viewers squirm even when there seems nothing tangible on shroud to squirm about. But in the waste, this is the film for which Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, and John Gavin will forever be remembered… and one of the several films that will forever be associated with one of the twentieth century’s most masterful directors.

This DVD largely restores PSYCHO to its recent construct. Although the first few minutes of the print explain wear and scuttle, for the most share it is remarkably pristine and (after years of pan and scan television broadcasts) is returned to its novel ratio. While there is no audio commentary track, the DVD package includes the novel trailer with Alfred Hitchcock, extensive production notes, and an extremely impressive documentary that includes numerous interviews, newsreel footage, production photographs, storyboards, and the like. Even if you have the film on VHS, you’ll likely want to prefer the DVD. Strongly recommended.

This is the second attempt to get a movie out of a Terry Pratchett unusual and it succeeds rather well. In this case, the movie is based on the first two novels in the ‘Discworld’ series, ‘The Colour of Magic’ and ‘The Light Fantastic’.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Color of Magic! Click Here

Rincewind (David Jason), an inept wizard, is expelled from Unseen University. On a dare, he snuck a search for at the Octavo, the book passe to beget the world, and one of the eight huge spells lodged in his head.

At the same time, Twoflower (Sean Astin) arrives in Ankh-Morpork to “see at it”. He’s the Discworld’s first tourist and he travels with the Luggage, a box made of sapient pearwood that moves about on hundreds of cramped legs and will follow it’s owner everywhere.

After conning Twoflower, Rincewind is dragged to the Patrician’s palace and ordered by Lord Vetinari (Jeremy Irons) to guide Twoflower safely through the city.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Color of Magic! Click Here

Twoflower, introducing the notion of fire insurance to Ankh-Morpork, inadvertently causes the entire city to burn down and he and Rincewind rush and Rincewind is plunged into several life threatening situations which he survives by sheer luck.

The capable parts of this movie are Jeremy Irons as the Patrician and Tim Curry as Ymper Trymon, second in protest of one of the eight orders of wizardry at the university. Both play their roles with like and Curry’s performance is as great, if not better, than that of Cardinal Richelieu in ‘The 3 Musketeers’.

The terrible parts? Well, a lot of the superb scenes in both novels are left out. There is no travelling shop, no Hrun the Barbarian, no flying rock and no Tethis the sea troll. There is also no gingerbread cottage or broomstick flying.

Also, they unfortunately chose a white actor to represent Twoflower, when it’s made determined in both ‘The Colour of Magic’ and ‘Interesting Times’ that Twoflower is Chinese. A staunch shame, but Sean Astin does a fabulous job at portraying Twoflower’s attitude of looking at the world through rose coloured glasses.

And they got Cohen the Barbarian’s (David Bradley) teeth defective.

Although this movie takes a while to obtain going, it does find funnier as it goes along and there are some tall one-liners. “I am having a approach Rincewind experience.”

Christopher Lee reprises the remark of Death, as he did in the enchanting versions of ‘Soul Music’ and ‘Wyrd Sisters’ and he has some of the best parts in the movie.

Aside from the limited annoyances, the movie is quite obliging, the actors are suitable, it’s got all the wittiness you’d ask from Pratchett, and I loved it.

A live-action Terry Pratchett movie is either doomed to fail in every method, or succeed in practically everything.

And “The Colour of Magic,” adapted from the first two novels in Pratchett’s smart Discworld series, is more the used than the latter. This one is no “Hogather” — it has rather slow direction at times — but it preserves Pratchett’s wry satirical sense of humour. And of course, it’s all about a mercenary, cowardly failed wizard.

Rincewind (David Jason) is ejected from the Unseen University, on the very day that Twoflower (Sean Astin) arrives with his many-legged Luggage. He’s reach to the Disc… to “discover at it.” But after Rincewind tries to con Twoflower, the Patrician (Jeremy Irons) orders Rincewind to be the guide/bodyguard of the Disc’s first ever tourist.

After a massive fire sweeps through the city, the two ruin up fleeing Ankh-Morpork and running into all sorts of irregular things — a very assertive magic sword, a floating island fleshy of see-through dragons, a dramatic dragonlady in a leather bikini, astrozoologists trying to decide Grand A’Tuin’s gender, the conventional Cohen the (retired) Barbarian, druids, and even getting thrown sure off the Disc in a outlandish spacecraft. And you understanding YOU had problems.

Unfortunately the Unseen University is having troubles of its beget — the magical book Octavo is acting queer, and power-hungry Trymon (Tim Curry) is scheming against the Archchancellor. Even worse, a curious red star has appeared in the sky, and the world is facing destruction. The only thing that can place it is the spell in Rincewind’s head.

Perhaps it’s because it’s based on the first, roughest Discworld books, but “Colour of Magic” is not quite as amusing or tightly-written as its predecessor, “Hogather.” The writing is not quite as complex or as witty, and the direction sometimes feels a bit slow (such as the bar fight scene, or Trymon skulking and schemind around the University) .

But despite these drawbacks, “Colour of Magic” is tranquil a vastly consuming anecdote — it has a solid plotline and it chugs away nicely after a somewhat indolent beginning, and blossoms into full-out complexity about halfway through. Once it gets underway it starts to resemble a road-trip through fantasy-land, with our quirky tourist and wizard bungling their blueprint across the Disc.

Along the blueprint there’s some fun action (an upside-down duel), comical dialogue (”You weren’t born with a mysterious birthmark in the shape of a crown, were you? “), and a general air of tongue-in-cheekness. Best of all, it’s a fantasy spoof — Vadim Jean preserves Pratchett’s clever satire aimed at the staples of your average fantasy: fantasy babes, prophecies, magic swords, retired barbarians, grand artifacts, and even the thought of reality warping itself to place the “hero.”

Jason is wonderfully snivelly and sour as Rincewind, a failed wizard who basically finds himself repeatedly swept up into bizarre, deadly circumstances even though he didn’t want to be eager. Astin is even better as the hilariously oblivious Twoflower, who regards every danger as yet another big adventure (”We’re going to bustle out of world!” “I have to glimpse that!”) .

And there’s a talented supporting cast — Curry chews the scenery with sneering aplomb, Karen David plays a humorously over-the-top dragon-lady, and Irons has a tiny but incredible role as the cold, efficient Vetinari. And of course, the luminous Christopher Lee takes over as an increasingly disappointed Death.

“Colour of Magic” isn’t as tightly directed as it could have been, but it serene manages to be clever and quite comical.

The synopsis …

Sam and Jonah Baldwin, father and son, have lost the most well-known woman in their lives to cancer. Seeking to elope from the painful memories that lurk in every nook and cranny of Chicago, they proceed to Seattle. Eighteen months later, Jonah can sense that his dad is mild sad; and, in desperation calls a nationally syndicated radio self-help guru on Christmas Eve to wish for his father a modern wife. Annie Reed lives in Baltimore and is engaged to Walter. Their relationship, while loving and comfortable, is entirely devoid of romantic sparks. When Annie hears Jonah’s soulful plea on the radio, it’s as if her heart has been touched by “magic” and she is distinct to salvage out why she feels so powerfully drawn to Sam and his son … even if it means traveling across “like 26 states”.

The critique …

Sleepless in Seattle is a brilliantly simple film; that’s what makes it so large. To quote Nora Ephron, “It isn’t a movie about like, it’s a movie about worship in the movies.” To emphasize this point, she incorporates various parallel references to “An Affair to Remember” throughout the film; but, Sleepless is also a movie about our suitable romantic fantasies and sentimental ideals about falling in treasure (which, let’s admit it, have been undeniably shaped by what we’ve seen on the silver camouflage) . The script is refreshingly candid, yet endearing and Nora Ephron’s direction is impeccable. Ross Malinger, cast as Jonah Baldwin, is the youngest and most essential talent in the film. He does an kindly job of portraying THE quintessential eight-year-old; he’s impulsive, mopish and thinks he knows it all. (I train from experience here folks; I currently have a son that age.) He and Tom Hanks advance together flawlessly as father and son; so successfully in fact, that they would be utterly convincing off hide. The chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks is equally unbelievable, which is no diminutive achievement considering the fact that they rarely appear together in a scene. The supporting cast is brimming with talent and includes Rosie O’Donnell, Bill Pullman, Rita Wilson, Buy Reiner, David Hyde Pierce, and a young Gaby Hoffmann. Families with younger children will enjoy the film’s integrity; there is very cramped unfriendly language (”God damn it” and ” … it frightened the shit out of me …” being the worst of it) and no “sexual grunt” to be wary of. All around, this is a winning film. One that I secure myself watching over and over and over again.

The DVD …

For a 10th Anniversary Edition, the special features are few and rather disappointing. You’ve got your basic director commentary, a music video (”When I Plunge in Treasure” by Celine Dion & Clive Griffin), and a “Worship in the Movies” Featurette. This last section is approximately 15 minutes long. It features the director, producers, actors and the hosts of Loveline: Drew Pinsky and Adam Carolla (why they are included, I don’t know) talking about “Savor in the Movies.” There are some absorbing interview segments with an Empire Space Building Historian and some very dazzling shots of the Fresh York skyline before 9/11; but there’s certainly nothing here to write home about. By far, the most interesting feature is that you can resolve your aspect ratio. (And honestly, how consuming is that? ) This a DVD that you purchase for the film alone.

Some people have songs, my husband and I have a movie. We not only met in Seattle, my husband lived next to Lake Union, very stop to where this movie was made. He actually saw them filming scenes from the movie.

You could say the roles were a bit reversed, being I was the one getting over a relationship and he was not really looking at the time. Having lived in Seattle for many years, I especially enjoyed seeing scenes from Pike Dwelling Market and West Seattle.

Rosie O’Donnell adds to the wit with lines like: “You want to be in care for in a movie.” Tom Hanks gives a sensitive performance as Sam who lost the admire of his life. He and his son Jonah, live on Lake Union. Annie (Meg Ryan) is caught up with plans for her wedding. She is engaged and not looking for fancy. Yet, as it so often happens, worship does appear when you are not looking.

One night Annie hears a radio note where Jonah has called in to ask how his father could derive a original wife. The radio host invites Sam to assert his heart and Annie literally cries when he says how his wife ragged to design everything in his life radiant. She makes a connection and starts fantasizing about a man she has never met.

The songs are masterfully woven into the epic and provides a feeling of primitive fashioned romance, where destiny draws two lovers to one another. There is also a sense of family and how everyone has needs and desires. Jonah especially wants a mother. Annie and Sam don’t really know what they want, but they do net what they need. I found that very accurate to life.

Wit, chemistry, laugh-out-loud humor and romance, romance, romance! Worth watching at least once a year during the holiday season!

Dreamy!

This 2-disc set presents 4 episodes focused on different areas in which the human body is “pushing the limits”: sight, strength, sensation, & brain power. I have actually shown some clips in my general psychology class as the material is presented in an easy to follow & interesting format — perfect for freshmen! For anyone who is a Discovery Channel geek like myself, whether you’re an educator or it’s just a hobby (or both), this is a must-have for your collection. My only regret is that I bought it directly from the Discovery Channel website rather than Amazon.com — I could’ve saved about $15!

This is the first year that I am teaching a human anatomy and physiology class in high school. I was looking for some materials to supplement the usual textbook/memorization that accompanies a course like this. This is an excellent video(s). It’s too long to show at one long stretch in class, but broken up, it really helps to break up the monotony that can so easily come to an anatomy class. And it’s well done, so the kids enjoy it for it’s entertainment value as well. It can be difficult to find videos that are educational and entertaining without being cheesey, but this video accomplishes that task well.

I can’t understand why this DVD doesn’t rate a total 5 stars here! It’s one of the best DVDs I have because it looks absolutely dazzling, the songs are great, the plot is silly - but so what?, the love story is great, the chemistry between John Raitt and Doris Day is out of this world, the “extra” on the DVD is superb (an outtake from the film of Doris singing a song that was dropped from the film!)…I can’t get enough of this DVD! It should win awards for picture quality! If I wanted to sell someone on DVDs in general, I’d pick this DVD as evidence of their superiority over videos. And whatta FUN film!!

Labor relations in a pajama factory. This is the world into which songwriters Adler and Ross managed to weave a string of Broadway standards (”Hey There”, “Hernando’s Hideaway”) in the musical “The Pajama Game”.

In 1955 it opened on Broadway with legendary director George Abbot at the helm and newcomer Bob Fosse making his debut as choreographer. John Raitt (the original Billy Bigalow in “Carousel”), Eddie Foy Jr., and Retta Shaw all earned praise for their work and Carol Haney delivered a career-making performance in a supporting role. (A week after the show opened, Carol Haney was ill so her understudy, chorus girl Shirley McLaine, went on in the part with no rehearsal. She was a great success, especially to film producer Hal Ashby who was in the audience to see Haney. He brought McLaine to Hollywood to star in his upcoming Hitchcock film, which started Shirley’s career.)

In 1957 Warner Brothers brought the entire cast and production team from New York to do the film version. All, that is, but one. Janice Paige was replaced by Doris Day as Babe Williams, the feisty union garment worker opposite John Raitt’s suave role as Pajama Factory manager, Sid Sorokin.

Doris Day comes across with a bit more grit in both her acting and her voice than many may be expecting. But she makes a great Babe - whether belting “I’m Not At All in Love” or cooing the romantic ballad “Hey There”. John Raitt is equally adept as Sid and does so well with his tough guy good looks, that you wonder why Hollywood failed to cast him in any of his previous stage hits. But it’s that full baritone voice that knocks you over. A voice of such lush timbre that contemporaries like Frank Sinatra and Gordon McRae pale in comparison.

Carol Haney is a hoot as the zany (and at one point hilariously drunk) bookkeeper, Gladys. And Eddy Foy Jr, a veteran vaudeville clown shows off as her insanely jealous boyfriend. (Ever hear of Eddie Foy and the Seven Little Foy’s? That’s where Eddie Jr. got his start with his father and siblings.) The script also allows small chorus parts like Barbara Nichols as the dopey blond Poopsie, Thelma Pelish as the zaftig Mae, and Jack Straw as the nebbish Prez to shine in their roles and even gives them some of the best lines. (Mae: I like a man with spunk. Poopsie: You like a man, period!)

Broadway’s George Abbot teamed with Stanley Donen (”Singing in the Rain”) as director. But the other breakout talent here was Bob Fosse (”Cabaret” and “All That Jazz”), doing his first (credited) choreography for film. He stages the star turns (Day’s “Not at All in Love” and Raitt’s “Small Talk”, for example) like a pro. But he shines in the chorus numbers. Once a Year Day” explodes in athletic dances reminiscent of Michael Kidd (”Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “Hello Dolly”). And the mysterious “Hernando’s Hideaway” is done in total darkness with the singers lit only when they strike a match.

But the number that shows us what Fosse would become is undeniably “Steam Heat”. What would normally have been a throw-away number (a little amateur entertainment for a union rally) is infused with the slinky, inverted style that would become his trademark. No one had ever seen anything like it in 1957, and it “stops the show”, so to speak, were that possible in film.

For all the music and comic shenanigans, the film never looses the flavor of working class people in a small factory town. “Pajama Game” may not top its contemporaries like “Gigi” and “Singing in the Rain” - but it’s not trying to. It’s just a slice of middle America filled with some fine song and dance numbers and some of the top Broadway stars of the day.

IF you’ve never seen a Mark Forest muscle man movie this might be a good introduction, although I prefer him in “Mole Men Against the Son of Hercules” and “Kindar the Invulnerable.” Forest had the most phenomenal torso of any of the Italian Hercules actors who flooded Rome during the heyday of “Hercules.” Steve Reeves is still the apogee of blazing male beauty but Forest was more massive with enormous pecs, lats and a famously ridged stomach. His face was a work of art and his frequent scenes with actresses were sensuously believable. Forest exuded sex while Reeves was more godlike and remote. Forest was the most popular physique model of the 50s and went on to win Mr. America and Mr. Universe. He later became Mae West’s favorite muscleboy in her Las Vegas act, next to Reg Lewis. When you watch him, nearly naked, in all of his work, it is to be stare in wonder that a man could be so beautifully put together. Everything from his head to his legs and feet are all perfectly portioned. He left Italian movies at the top of his career and went on to become an opera singer and performed all over Europe. Nowadays, he still sings and teaches opera in los Angeles where he is–surprise–a personal trainer to the stars.

Kinda surprised I did not like this one, but whoever made this, put a lot of money into a flop. I think they tried to make a benhur without Christ as the Focal point of repentance, and took the name of Samson but without the great blessings of God in his final deathbed repentance, and thought that many would watch glory to men and false gods of egypt:-). The acting turned out lifeless, with no real entertainment value than if someone had taken some mud and thew them at the gold plated screen. So sad all the money spent to glorify other gods. Give me 10 Commandments or Ben Hur (the new cartoon or the older movie) or The Robe. This movie turned out to be 1/1000th of the value of those movies. Such a sad waste of talent and time :-(.
